“2009 Herb-of-the-Year: Bay Laurel”
|
The 2009 Herb-of-the-Year is Bay Laurel. Come attend this one-hour class if you would like to learn more about this herb and how to use it! You will receive a hand-out of useful information of the history, cultivation, medicinal uses, culinary uses, etc. of bay laurel, as Lisa gives an in-depth discussion of this information. Then each attendee will make the popular Bouquet Garni bouquets to use in culinary recipes. Choose to make either 2 fresh bouquets ($6 retail value) or a 5-bouquet raffia braid to hang and dry ($20 retail value). You will also take home a 2 year-old potted bay plant! ($25 value). Lisa has been growing these bay plants especially for this year; they are in one-gallon pots and are already around 2-ft. in height. Being such a slow grower, you will have a very usable plant to begin your bay adventures! |
$25.00 (2 fresh bouquets + plant) $35.00 (5-bouquet braid + plant) |

Easter Planting of the "Native American Three Sisters Garden" Class
|
This is a new class being offered for the first time at The Little Herb House and should prove to be lots of fun!! We will plant a "Native American Three Sisters" garden at the farm. According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans, and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together. Growing a Three Sisters garden is a wonderful way to feel more connected to the history of this land, regardless of our ancestry. Each attendee will receive a seed pack of Renee's Garden Three Sisters seeds: multi-colored Indian Corn, Scarlet Runner Beans to twine up the corn stalks and Sugar Pie Pumpkins to cover the ground ($6.29 value). You will also receive a diagram of the suggested planting of this garden [Note: A 10 x 10 foot square of space for your Three Sisters garden is the minimum area needed to ensure good corn pollination and a site in full sun (minimum 6-8 hours/day of direct sunlight throughout the growing season)]. In this class, Lisa will discuss the history and sustainable system that our wise ancestors were using - it is our modern day "sustainable organic garden!" And in honor of their wisdom, each attendee will receive a 4-inch potted sage plant ($4.00 value), symbolizing wisdom (you know an herb had to be in there somewhere). Looking forward to seeing you at this fun and informative class!! |

Spring Open House "Living Herb Wreath" Class |
Living wreaths are beautiful, but in actuality there are very few plants that like the confines of a wreath design. They can be hard to water and care for - unless you use herbs and succulents! Come for a fun afternoon of learning how to care for a living wreath and then planting your very own. The 14-inch wreath base has a wire frame filled with a tube of soil, and then covered with lush Woodland Moss, making the difficult and messy job already done for you! Choose from a variety of plants, including creeping rosemary, creeping thymes, golden oregano, creeping jenny, hens-and-chicks, portulacas, and other succulents. Class will be held in the stable area - see you there! |

"Wreath of Herbs Terra Cotta Basket" Painting Class |
Dot O'Neal, local artist and painting instructor, returns to The Little Herb House for another class! Dot's work is featured on the original Little Herb House "house," and her class in November '08 at the Christmas Open House was well-received. Attendees requested another class with Dot, so here goes! This time we will be painting a 6-inch terra cotta flower/herb pot done in a basket-weave design. In Part I, you will learn the basket-weave design and paint it onto your pot. Then in Part II, we will paint the wreath of herbs, including rosemary, lavender, chamomile, etc. In this class you will learn stroke techniques including the "C" and "S" strokes and the comma stroke. You will complete the pot in Part II, and then Lisa will throw in a 4-inch potted herb (your choice) to plant in your beautiful, hand-painted pot! |
